PLACES TO VISIT AND ACTIVITIESWithin walking distance of the cottage is Rutland Water, one of Europe's largest man made lakes, which provides the opportunity for walkers, cyclists, sailors, fishermen and bird watchers to enjoy themselves in beautiful surroundings. Also within walking distance are: With slipways giving access to the water for dinghies and keelboats, superb clubhouse facilities and a well stocked chandlery, Rutland Sailing Club offers everything a sailor could want. The 13 acre site is also home to RUTLAND SAILING SCHOOL and RUTLAND SAILABILITY. Tuition, fishing permits and boat hire available throughout the trout fishing season. There is also an excellent tackle shop and a restaurant with views over Rutland Water. The shop run by cyclists for cyclists offering advice, cycle hire, sales and repairs. A short drive away from Edith Weston are: Nature reserves and bird watching centres at Lyndon (home of the Rutland Osprey Project) and Egleton. The Egleton reserve has almost doubled in size over the past year with the creation of new lagoons and wetlands and plays host to the Rutland Bird Fair each August. Both centres are staffed by dedicated wildlife enthusiasts who are only too willing to answer questions and ensure that your visit will be one to remember. Geoff Hamilton's famous gardens. Many of the small gardens will be instantly recognisable from Gardener's World, but others have been altered by his son, Nick, to reflect modern trends. Oakham, the County town, has an interesting museum and castle together with many small, individually owned shops. Uppingham is home to beautiful architecture and one of England's most prestigious public schools. Take time to look around the antique shops or watch the world go by from one of the many tea rooms. The town of Stamford is renowned for its Georgian buildings and has been used as the setting for several period dramas. There is a thriving market held each Friday.
